How to install and update the browser extensions

Thanks for using 1Password! We have recently introduced an all-new extension with some great new features. As a result, you may need to perform a one-time installation of our new extension to continue using 1Password with the latest version of your browser. After that, your browser will update the 1Password extension automatically!

How to update 1Password

This is an important first step. Since we are always improving 1Password, you will want to be sure you are running the very latest version just in case there are updates which are required for compatibility with the specific browser version you are using.

Checking for updates in 1Password

  1. Open 1Password
  2. Select Check for Updates from the 1Password application menu
  3. If an update is available, a dialog appears explaining its new features and fixes. Click the “Install Update” button to begin the process
  4. Once the download finishes, restart 1Password when prompted
  5. Enjoy 1Password

How to update the Safari extension

By default Safari will update the 1Password extension automatically, but performing a manual update is simple:

  1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions and compare the latest version of your 1Password extension to our extension changelog

  2. If automatic updates are enabled (which we recommend) but you know a newer version is available, temporarily disable the automatic option which should display any update available

  3. Click the Install button, then reenable automatic updates to let Safari continue to update you automatically

  4. Restart the 1Password Agent: Open 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Agent

  5. Restart Safari:

    • Snow Leopard users: press Command-Q
    • Lion users: press Command-Option-Q (this completely clears its cache) but note that you will lose all your open windows and tabs so bookmark any as necessary (Note: If you disabled “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps’ in System Preferences > General then please use Command-Q to quit Safari under Lion)
