Safari 5.1 extension intro

We designed an all-new Safari extension to comply with the new technologies and rules that Apple introduced in Lion and Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard users. As a result, you’ll need to perform a one-time install of our new extension to continue using 1Password with Safari. After that, Safari will update our extension automatically!

Below are a few how-tos for updating 1Password and getting our new extension installed.

How to update 1Password

  1. Open 1Password and go to 1Password > Check for Updates
  2. If an update is available, a dialog appears explaining its new features and fixes. Click the “Install Update” button to begin the process
  3. Once the download finishes, restart 1Password when prompted
  4. Enjoy 1Password

How to install the new Safari 5.1 extension

If you just upgraded to Lion or Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard, please follow these steps:

1Password - Preferences - Browsers

  1. Before beginning, it wouldn’t hurt to check for an update to the 1Password app, detailed in the process above
  2. Open 1Password Preferences: In 1Password, go to Preferences > Browsers
  3. Install: Click the “Install Safari Extension” button. Safari will open and present a dialog confirming that you want to install our extension. Click Install
  4. Make sure Extensions are enabled: If the 1Password icon does not appear on the toolbar, click the Safari > Preferences menu, select the Extensions tab, and verify that Extensions are enabled
  5. Make sure Automatic Updates are enabled: In Safari’s Extensions preferences window, click the Updates button and ensure that in the section to the right, automatic updates are enabled
  6. Restart Safari: To start Safari with a clean slate, press Command-Option-Q to restart Safari. You will lose all your open windows and tabs so bookmark any as necessary

Once you’re done, get familiar with the new extension with our Safari 5.1 extension intro and FAQs.

How to update the new Safari 5.1 extension

Safari should update our new extension automatically (see steps 4 and 5 above), but performing a manual update is simple:

Safari extension update available

  1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions and click Updates
  2. If automatic updates are enabled (which we recommend) but you know a newer version is available, disable the automatic option which should display an update waiting, like in the image above
  3. Click the Install button, then reenable automatic updates to let Safari continue to update you automatically
  4. Restart Safari: To start Safari with a clean slate, press Command-Option-Q to restart Safari. You will lose all your open windows and tabs so bookmark any as necessary

How to opt into 1Password betas

We often issue new features and fixes in “beta” releases, which are optional downloads for customers who want to help us test new features and fixes. Here is how to opt into our 1Password beta process:

  1. In 1Password go to 1Password > Preferences > Updates, enable Betas, and then press Check Now. After upgrading, it wouldn’t hurt to check for an update to the Safari section, which is described in a process earlier in this document
  2. Join us in our support forums to provide proper feedback to our support staff and developers at http://forum.agilebits.com
